Frequently Asked Questions:

What age children do you accept?

We accept children from 24 months to 5 years old, with limited spaces for children aged 24-30 months.

Will I have to volunteer in the classroom?

Parent involvement is encouraged and we ask that each family contribute one classroom volunteer day per month.  If you are unable to do this, there is the option to opt-out of in class volunteering by paying an additional $35 per month fee.  Some things you will do as a classroom volunteer are cleaning, vacuuming, sorting, organizing, spending time with the children and assisting the teachers.  Some months require more and some less.  Alternatively, there are board positions and committees to join.  Fundraising is a huge part of our school and volunteers are always appreciated!  Please inquire for more info on the positions required at the time of registration.

**In-class parent volunteers were suspended during the pandemic. We are optimistic the classroom will welcome parent back in the upcoming school year subject to ministry and public health guidelines.**

Does my child have to be potty trained?

No! Your child may be in diapers, in pull ups, in underpants and just beginning training. We understand that it’s a process and will support families in their potty training efforts.

Can my child start any time during the year?

Yes! Whenever your child meets the minimum age and/or you feel she is ready, you may enroll subject to availability.  Even a few months of pre-school at the end of the school year can really help get your child ready for full time JK!

Do you do fundraising?

Yes! As a not-for-profit organization, we heavily rely on our fundraising initiatives to keep our fantastic school open for the children, year over year. Check out our fundraising page for more details!

Why should I choose ABC Nursery School?

In addition to the fact that we are a licensed and insured program, headed up by an RECE, we offer the following added benefits over the larger centres:

  • Large classroom, small class size. We know that the transition to care outside of the home can be trying for child and parent alike. Our small centre helps to ease that transition by ensuring your child is not overwhelmed by large, frenetic groups of kids and parents coming and going each day. Our centre has only one classroom with a maximum capacity of 16 children each day. You and your child will quickly come to know all his classmates, other parents and teachers!
  • Flexible start dates and scheduling. We offer 2-3 day half-day and 2-5 day full day programming. Our program can serve as a tool for socialization, and space allowing, your child can transition to longer days to better prepare for a full day of JK!
  • Supportive network of families, educators and the wider community.  ABC attracts families that seek a play-based learning environment and want to be engaged in their child’s development during such a critical time. Our educators share our values and enjoy working alongside families to foster the growth and independence of our little ones. The surrounding community plays a vital role whether through in-class visits or financial contributions to maintain quality programming at affordable pricing.

Is ABC Nursery participating in the CWELCC Program ($10/day childcare)?

In October 2022, ABC Nursery School Inc. opted-in to the Canada-Wide Early Learning and Child Care System (CWELCC). The System was a result of the Ontario government signing a historic deal with the federal government to lower licensed child care fees to an average of $10 a day by September 2025. Please see our parent handbook for more details or visit the City of Hamilton’s Website as the program continues to evolve.

I have more questions. Can I come in for a visit?

We love visitors! We are open weekdays from 9am-2pm and you are welcome to stop in if the visit is requested and confirmed ahead of time with our teaching staff. Note school visits ceased during the Covid-19 pandemic and our school is currently revisting our in-class visit policies for new and interested families. Virtual tours are available on our Facebook page and and after hours visits are available.
